The Martian Movie Review

Right at the heels of a major NASA announcement, “The Martian” appears in theaters a little bit cocky, a little science-y, and a little bit lighthearted. Matt Damon is perfectly cast as the plucky astronaut-stranded-in-Mars from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel-turned-space-adventure.

It’s man vs nature in “The Martian”, a lighter take on space exploration compared to its sci-fi peers Interstellar and Gravity, which have both chosen the drama-filled, family-oriented path. Through sheer brilliance, optimism and dry sense of humor, man, in the form of Mark Watley (Matt Damon), space explorer extraordinaire, was able to find ways to survive on Mars.

The movie has managed to create an entertaining sci-fi experience for the general public by toning down nerdy topics like chemistry, astronomy and orbital mechanics (nosebleed please) and including a stellar, award-winning cast. What else can you expect from a film with noted sci-fi film director Ridley Scott at the helm? Great visuals, entertaining scenes, an emotional roller coaster until the credits roll in. The arid Mars landscape in the film looks awesome in 3D, to boot!

Another point for the ladies: The movie has several female characters in empowering roles. Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain stars as Commander Melissa Lewis, head of the six-man crew of the Ares 3, the manned space ship headed for Mars. (On a side note, when asked regarding her character, Chastain said, “She is such a well-written character, another in the legacy of Ridley’s remarkable women characters. Lewis came from the Navy, and has to lead a team of specialists who are very smart and have very specific tasks to perform. She is friendly and personable with her crew, but wants to leave no doubt as to who is in charge.”)

Simply put, the movie is a MUST-WATCH! Inspiring, empowering, uplifting, the movie is all about mankind, our natural thirst for knowledge, and our tenacity to exceed our limits.

Catch Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Peña, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Kirsten Wiig, Jeff Daniels and Sean Bean (no, he won’t die!) in this realistic sci-fi adventure! “The Martian” hits Philippine theaters tomorrow, September 30.
